Cycling is one of the most wonderful exercises for our lungs, heart and keeping our optimal weight, not to mention an incredible addition to living a positive and healthy life. It is easy to get into, enjoyably and also provides a practical mode of transportation that is better for the environment than driving your car. You can go where you need to go while getting your exercise done at the same time!

The health benefits of cycling are proven.

Almost No Negative Impact On the Body

Many types of exercise, though great for your health, can also provide some negative impact on the body. These are where many of the aches and pains come from in our later years of life, so you want to understand how the activities you are performing affect you in all ways.

One example is jogging, which is a great sport, but causes a constant pounding of your heel against the ground. This has the potential to be hard on the knees in the long run if you're not careful. Biking offers nice fluid motions and is easy on the joints. There's no pounding or impacting, just good clean exercise.

Great Health Benefits

A regular exercise activity like biking can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease to half. In order to make biking a regular part of your life, you need to develop the habit and keep it consistent. To develop this habit, it is imperative to keep it positive and enjoyable or your beginning enthusiasm will die out in a few weeks time.

Here are a few tips on how to go about that:

1. Do it with a friend

Getting a friend to regularly bike with is a great way to go. There is absolutely no greater self made motivator than a goof friend who is also depending on you to bike/excercise with him or her. You will provide motivation for your friend and your friend will provide motivation for you. Develop a schedule and help each other to stick to it!

2. Find a Riding Group

If you don't have a friend to ride with, than make some in a good riding group. Joining a riding group will get you to cycle faster and farther than you would do on your own and gives you a reason to do it regularly. You also get to make friends with like minded individuals and have a grand time while you're getting fit. You will always go further and farther with a group.

3. Ride to Your Job

By biking to your job, you are not only making a better choice for the environment than driving a car, but you are making a top notch choice for the health of your body. Not only that, but you are transporting yourself to work at the same time! It's a two in one deal! Make sure you wear a proper helmet and other gear if necessary and know the rules of biking on the road and take proper precautions so you stay safe. Personally I hate riding on busy roads and try to stick to safer off beat locations, even if it takes me a little longer to get there.

Use Common Sense

To get a great workout on your bike you will need to push yourself a little, but don't push yourself too fast until you are good and ready. Use your common sense, and seek proper medical counsel if you think there may be some health reason you should not be biking.

Take Care of Your Bike

More and more bikers are learning to take responsibility for their bike and managing their own bike maintenance and repairs. Repairs will become necessary in time, and doing your own is a good way to feel more ownership towards your bicycle. Learning how a bike functions and knowing when it is not working perfectly is an extremely fulfilling and useful skill.

Knowledge on proper bike repairs is not hard to learn can be found easily on the internet. Get a good bike repair stand, a few tools and a little information, and you will become a home mechanic pro in no time.

Cycling is an great addition to your life and will provide many, many benefits in the long run. I wish you the best of luck and enjoyment in your biking life!
